Artwork is lovely to look at, and it has the power to make people feel and think differently. But do you know that when people see a real work of art, rather than just looking at a photo of it, they are likely to experience stronger feelings? Scientists recently carried out a study at the Mauritshuis museum, the home to Girl with a Pearl Earring (珍珠耳环), a very famous painting. ① The researchers watched how people reacted (反应) to several paintings. First, the volunteers were asked to look at the real paintings on show, and then at photos of the artworks in the museum shop. ② It was shown that their reactions were 10 times stronger when they looked at the real paintings. ③ How did that happen? Through study, people may experience something called the “sustained attentional cycle (持续注意力循环)”when they watch a certain painting. The volunteers’ attention was first drawn to the girl’s left eye, then to her mouth, and then to her pearl earring. This certain order of eye movements repeated in a cycle. Each time they completed the cycle, their focus became stronger and their connection with Girl with a Pearl Earring was deeper. ④ The director of the Mauritshuis, Martine Gosselink, said that the study shows how important it is to go and see art in real life, whether it’s paintings, photography or dancing. She added, “It really helps develop your brain.” The researchers now want to broaden their study, planning to visit other museums and do similar experiments on works like Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.26. We can put the following sentence “The team also found that the group reacted even more strongly to Girl with a Pearl Earring.” in ______.27. How does the writer introduce the “sustained attentional cycle”?28. Which one shows the relationship between the time people spend in watching the painting(x)and people’s focus(y)?29. 题目插图Recently, on a busy street in Shenzhen, a new traffic robot started its work. It uses AI to help direct traffic. This is a big step forward for the city’s traffic. The robot looks like a real police officer and stands at a crossing in Longgang District. It wears a police uniform. From far away, it looks very much like a real person. But up close you can see its cool, metallic body. It has become a small star in the area, and people often stop to take photos of it.The robot can manage traffic by itself without help from human police. It has a smart AI system to “see” things. It moves in the same way and at the same time as the traffic lights. When the light turns green, it makes a gesture for cars to go and reminds drivers to follow the rules. The robot can also find traffic problems, such as e-bike riders not wearing helmets (头盔). When it finds a problem, it makes a sound and uses hand gestures to ask people to correct it.Local police say this robot is a good example of how Shenzhen is making traffic smarter. By doing simple tasks, it lessens the workload for human police. This way, police officers can spend more time on other important jobs. In the future, the government plans to use more robots. They may help check for drunk driving and record traffic problems. With these smart helpers, Shenzhen’s traffic will become safer and better for everyone.11. When do people realize the traffic robot is not a real police officer?12. Why does the robot make a sound and use hand gestures sometimes?13. How does the traffic robot help make Shenzhen’s traffic smarter?14. What is one plan for future traffic robots?15. What is the main idea of the whole passage?

The US state of Michigan is often called the“Car Capital of the World”. Many famous car companies, such as Ford and General Motors, were born there. But off the state’s northern coast in Lake Huron (休伦湖) lies an unusual island, Mackinac. This 3.8-square-kilometre island, where cars are not allowed, stands out because there is not a single car.But why are there no cars? According to Morse, a local store owner, it’s because the horse is king here.In 1898, a car made a sudden loud noise after an engine problem. The sound frightened the nearby horses and village officials decided to ban (禁止) cars. The rest of the island later followed this rule.Today, more than a century later, horses do everything, like collecting garbage and delivering mail, on Mackinac Island. About 30 horses live on the island all year round. “That’s what our lives have been like,” said Morse.“We like the tradition of getting around on foot, by bike or by horse.”In April, before the busy tourist season, another 600 horses are brought to the island to help keep things running. In just a few weeks, about 1.2 million people arrive by ferry (渡轮). They shop for tasty candy, explore beautiful country roads, and enjoy the clip-clop sounds of a simpler time. When autumn arrives, the extra horses head back to the mainland. Winter on Mackinac can be hard. The island is often cut off from the mainland as the surrounding lakes freeze over. But once spring returns, Mackinac comes alive again. The trees begin to flower. The extra horses come back, along with the tourists. Why not spread your wings and visit Mackinac?16. What does the underlined phrase “this rule” in Paragraph 2 refer to?17. How many horses may be on Mackinac Island in June?18. What can we learn about Mackinac Island from the passage?19. Language experts now find that old Chinese poems and old Western poems have many surprising similarities. People did not notice these points for hundreds of years. Literature researchers study old writings from different cultures. They are very happy about this finding. These same ideas appear in works written over one thousand years apart (相距). Those poets never knew each other at all. A research team on old literature recently shared their study. They talked about these same topics and feelings in old poems. The team said they were comparing old texts for a translation work. Then they found these same expressions. Other researchers said the poems seemed to have quite different styles at first. But careful comparison made the links clear, For example, a Tang Dynasty poem talks about time passing quickly. It uses pictures of falling flowers and running rivers. A Roman poet from the same time wrote about time as a river. The river carries all things away. Both poets used nature to show a common feeling. People fear losing valuable things.Researchers are now collecting more examples. They want to find the real reason for these similarities. They think these points come from common human experiences. Poets from all cultures naturally write about these experiences. Besides the same ideas, the poems keep their own cultural styles. Chinese poets often use quiet and indirect words to show feelings. Western poets of the same time liked more direct and strong words. This cross-cultural literature work started in 2018. It is now studying over 800 old poems. These poems come from Chinese and European traditions. People wrote these works in times when cultures had little or no direct contact. Researchers say these hidden links may change how people understand world literature history. Future studies can explore how these same themes show common ideas about life and the world.21. What do we know about the poets who wrote the similar poems?22. What does the word “links” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?23. Which example best shows that poets from different cultures share similar feelings?24. Why do researchers think poets from different cultures wrote about similar topics?25. What do the last two paragraphs mainly want to show?

BThey lived in the same country,
CThey had no knowledge of each other.
DThey wrote at the exact same time

These days, many of us are no strangers to drones (无人机). We use them to take amazing pictures or send things. But a man in the US came up with a new idea. He turned his drone into a “Poopcopter” to pick up dog poop (粪便).Caleb Olson, 30, is an engineer. As the owner of a playful dog, Olson knows that cleaning up after a dirty dog is not enjoyable. “Lots of people have dogs, but nobody likes to touch dog poop,” he said. “I thought, ‘Why not make something to do this dirty work?”The “Poopcopter” is basically a drone with a camera on it. As the drone flies over a certain area, the camera looks for dog poop on the ground. Once it finds poop, the drone lands and picks it up before flying it to a rubbish bin.Olson toyed with other names for his invention (发明), such as the “Doo DooDrone”, but the “Poopcopter” won out in the end. “It’s like a little poop-picking helicopter (直升飞机),” he explained. “The name is short, but it tells the idea clearly.”The “Poopcopter” is still in the experimental (实验) stage. Olson is trying to make it work better. Then, he plans to sell it in the future. The simple design and materials mean that the “Poopcopter” could be cheap. Would you like to buy one for your dog?16. Have you ever hugged (拥抱) a tree? Do you know hugging trees is good for us? Recently, many people have shared their stories of hugging trees online. Although it sounds unusual, there is a science behind the act of tree-hugging.A famous scientist ever said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people like natural, green views better than city views. Some studies have looked into why hugging trees can help with our health. A study shows that the act of tree-hugging can make the oxytocin (催产素) higher. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can help boost your oxytocin.Hugging trees is different from hugging people or animals. It gives us a chance to really get close to the tree. We can smell it, touch it and listen to the sound of the leaves. The steadiness (稳固) of the tree makes us feel safe.Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it. Trees often hold many things that are good for the environment. Many small animals live in the tree and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees-just like how you hug a friend!21. How does the writer begin the passage?22. What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 3 mean?23. Two students work with a computer as they test a self-driving car. Self-driving cars don’t need people to drive them. They can “see” the road by themselves. Have you wondered how that works?A school in Jiangsu province has an answer. It even lets students make their own self-driving cars! The Suzhou Science and Technology Town Foreign Language School has a special lab. Students go there for their smart transportation class. In the class, they look at car models carefully.“This helps students better understand the different car parts,” said IT teacher Guo Shuang. After that, students learn to code (编程). They write programs to make their cars move and do different tasks. The class is very fun. “Our teacher always lets us learn by doing,” said 15-year-old Zhang Xiaoxi. “Each step makes me proud of what I can do.”But it’s not always easy to make the cars run well. Sometimes, they get “lost”. In one class, students tried to make their cars follow a white line. “Sometimes the sensor wasn’t sensitive (灵敏的) enough for the car to turn in time. However, people preferred to use it for fortune telling rather than navigation back then.In the 38 (eleven) century, the Northern Song Dynasty saw a great improvement. People created small needles with magnetized steel. One end of the needle points north, while 39 other points south. The earliest magnetic compass was thus created, and it 40 (put) into use in navigation by ancient sailors all over the country. This invention made long-distance sea voyages possible. People slowly realized that the compass could really change the world greatly. Over the years, humans 41 (be) able to explore new sea routes that were once unreachable. 42 the compass, many European countries could not have made great progress in sea voyages. It was not until the early 14th century that the compass was introduced to Europe from China. Helen often sees homeless (无家可归的) people on the streets in her town. From a young age, she and her mother often give them sandwiches and water. Helen knows that fresh fruits and vegetables are not easy to get at food banks (食物银行). Homeless people usually get canned (罐装) or boxed food there. This gives her an idea.“There is a garden in our backyard that we didn’t use,” she says. “I will ask my mother if I can grow food there for the homeless.” And her mum thinks it’s a good idea. Now, Helen’s garden grows different fresh foods like strawberries, blueberries, and tomatoes. When the fruits and vegetables are ready, she picks, washes, and puts them into bags. Then she and her mother give the bags to people on the street or to a local (当地的) food bank. So far, Helen has given away (分发) more than 550 pounds of food! When they give out the food, they often meet the same homeless people many times. ①Labor (劳动) classes at school can help students be active and happy in life. At the same time, students can learn the meaning (意义) of labor. So from this September, students in middle school have one labor class a week.②There are many interesting labor classes now. Students from a school in Chongqing have a class about catching fish in the river and learning about their habits. In Shanxi Province, students make tofu and also cook it. The labor classes make them feel happy. Some students also keep small animals at home like chickens. This helps students learn how to care for (照顾) living things and also make them more interested in biology (生物学).③According to the new policy (政策), middle school students need to learn many skills (技能) in labor classes: clean their rooms and classrooms, pick proper (合适的) clothes for travel, cook three or four meals and take part in labor activities such as planting or fishing.④Doing labor work is good for students. The students can get more self-control (自控), do better in school, and feel happier from it. Labor classes not only teach them important skills but also are a great way to relax during a busy school day. So which kind of labor skill do you want to learn most?27. Which paragraphs (段落) tell us what skills students learn in the labor class?28. What can we learn from the text?29. Why did the writer write this passage?
A①②

题目插图题目插图Whether you’re preparing for an exam or trying to learn a new musical instrument or even trying to perfect a new sport, sleep may secretly help improve your memory.Studies have actually told us that sleep is important for memory in at least three different ways. We know that you need sleep before learning to actually get your brain ready, almost like a dry sponge (海绵), ready to take in new information. And without sleep, the brain becomes “waterlogged” and can’t take in new information or create new memories properly. It’s not just important that you sleep before learning, you also need to sleep after learning to hit the save button on those new memories so that you don’t forget. In fact, sleep helps protect and strengthen memories, cementing them into the brain’s neural networks (神经网络). Scientists are starting to understand how sleep helps with this process. The first mechanism (机制) is a file-transfer (文件传输) process. And here, we can speak about two different structures within the brain. The first is called the hippocampus and it sits on the left and the right side of your brain. And you can think of the hippocampus almost like the informational inbox of your brain. It’s very good at receiving new memory files and holding onto them. The second structure that we can speak about is called the frontal cortex. It sits on top of your brain. And during deep sleep, there is this file-transfer mechanism. Think of the hippocampus like a USB stick and your cortex like the hard drive. And during the day, we’re going around and we’re collecting lots of files, but then during deep sleep at night, because of that limited storage ability, we have to transfer those files from the hippocampus over to the hard drive of the brain, the cortex. And that’s exactly one of the mechanisms that deep sleep seems to provide.Scientists have discovered another mechanism that helps store those memories into the brain, called replay. In an experiment, they studied how rats learned to run around a maze (迷宫) by recording brain activity. As the rats ran through the maze, their brain cells reacted to different parts of the maze, creating a “memory signature” (记忆特征). Interestingly, when the rats fell asleep, their brains replayed this memory signature. However, during sleep, the replay happened almost 10 times faster than when the rats were awake. This process is thought to help strengthen and store the memory. This seems to be the second way in which sleep can actually strengthen memories. The final way in which sleep is beneficial for memory is connection and organization. In fact, we’re now learning that sleep is much more powerful than we ever imagined. Sleep doesn’t just simply strengthen individual memories, sleep will actually cleverly interconnect new memories together. As a result, you wake up with a refreshed network of connections in your mind, allowing you to solve problems that seemed impossible before. And this is probably the reason that you’ve never been told to stay awake on a problem. Instead, you’re told to sleep on a problem, and that’s exactly what the science teaches us.30. How can we make the most of sleep to improve learning?31. What does the word “cementing” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?32. What can we learn from the passage?33. What is the passage mainly about?
ABy emptying the brain right after learning.
BBy sleeping for at least eight hours every day.
CBy taking in more information before sleeping.
DBy getting enough sleep before and after learning.
ABreaking.
BStoring.
CChanging.
DShaping.
AThe file-transfer mechanism works during the day.
BThe hippocampus interconnects memories together.
CThe cortex is where memories go during deep sleep.
DThe brain replays everything we notice when awake.
AThe importance of enough sleep.
BThe science behind a sound sleep.

It was March and the English Week at Sunshine Middle School arrived. This year was the Year of the Horse, and students learned horse proverbs.题目插图Li Ming, a shy Grade 8 student, was terrible at speaking English. He was afraid of being laughed at. When Ms. Wang announced a speech contest, Li Ming wanted to try but gave up. “I can’t do it,” he thought. On the first day of the English Week, Li Ming saw a poster “No pain, no gain.” Ms. Wang’s words echoed (回响) in his mind “Like a horse, you must run hard to reach the finish line because practice makes perfect.” Li Ming was so excited that he decided to finish his speech. He wanted to do everything quickly—he even planned to practice a hundred times that night. So he wrote a short speech about the Year of the Horse and practiced in front of a mirror again and again. His little sister laughed and said to him, “Hold your horses.” But he didn’t want to slow down at all.The contest day came. Li Ming’s hands were sweating. When his name was called, he walked onto the stage. He spoke fast—and made a mistake. His face turned red. He wanted to run away. But then he saw Ms. Wang smiling at him.
